3 Ways to Connect & Be Calm

You’re quarantined. You’re slowly losing your mind. Or worse – you’re essential personnel and you actually have to go out every day, slather yourself in antibacterial gel, keep your distance and do your job to keep your corner of the world running. What you really need right now is a safe way to connect that is more than just scrolling your Facebook feed for two more hours, or watching an entire series on Netflix.

Yup, we’re meeting on Zoom.

If you’re not yet familiar with the web conferencing tool that is saving our sanity during our world-wide quarantine, meet Zoom. Go sign up at Zoom.us, if you’re in the USA, or google it if you need to find the site in another country. Once you’ve got a free membership, all you have to do after that is click the links, which won’t change from week to week. Same meeting? Same link.

Who can attend?

You can.

You’ve never met me? You can attend.

You go to my church? You can attend.

You live in Australia? You can attend.

You’ve followed this blog for years? You can attend.

You’ve just found me on the internet?  You can attend.

You were at my wedding? You can attend.

You can attend.

Way One: Spiritual but not Religious

Friday, 6 PM EDT

Despite the rampant religiosity it takes to be a priest, my heart is in the spiritual but not religious zone. For those for whom this fits well, I’ll be discussing A Course In Miracles on Friday night at 6 PM (EDT, which is gmt-4 for people not on the east coast in the USA, Canada, or Brazil). This is a brand new discussion group, and I’ve been a student of the Course steadily for the last seven years.

If you are interested but don’t have a copy of A Course In Miracles you can go and get an ebook of it superfast on Amazon. It’s published by the Foundation for Inner Peace.

Mama Bear Disclaimer: In the interest of keeping a safe space safe, if you hate A Course in Miracles and think it’s nuts, please don’t join. If you do anyway, I’ll ask you to leave. It’s nothing personal, no worries.

Way Two: Progressive Christian Conversations: Bible Study or Pub Theology

Wednesday, 6 PM EDT

Let’s talk about God in a total free-for-all the first Wednesdays of the month. (It’s Pub Theology! But at home!)

Let’s read parts of the Bible you’ve maybe heard before and look for the lesson about love that is always trying to be taught, despite the total bizarre nature of reading ancient spiritual texts, and the conservative nature of historic interpretations.

We meet on Wednesday nights at 6 PM EDT, which is gmt -4.

Mama Bear Disclaimer: In the interest of keeping a safe space safe, if you hate liberal or progressive interpretations of holy scripture and think we’re all going to hell, please don’t join. (This is very different from being intrigued by the idea of another interpretation but deeply worried we’re all going to hell.) If you’re full of hate and join anyway, I’ll ask you to leave. It’s nothing personal, and I promise to pray for you afterwards.

Way Three: Pray With Me

Sunday, 7 PM, EDT

There are heaps of ways to pray. I’m going to be doing a YouTube series on it shortly. And here is just one: Praying Compline at night, or even every night if it works for you. I’ll join you on Sunday nights and lead it.

What’s Compline? It’s a short prayer service meant to be prayed last thing in the day. It takes about 10 minutes or so to do, and it’s located on page 127 of the Book of Common Prayer, if you happen to have one at home. If you don’t, check out bcponline.org – click on ‘Daily Office’ and then ‘Compline’.

Anyone can lead it. Anyone can participate. For the sake of using Zoom well, I’ll lead, and I’ll ask someone else who shows up to unmute their microphone and do the responses of all the people. And as you pray along, say the responses, but with your microphone on mute, or there’s just very weird feedback.

We meet on Sundays at 7 PM, EDT, which is gmt -4.

Mama Bear Disclaimer: In the interest of keeping a safe space safe, if you hate the Episcopal Church, the Anglican Communion, formal prayer, or liberal Christianity, please don’t join. If you do anyway, I’ll ask you to leave. It’s nothing personal, and I promise to pray for you afterwards.

What else?

How is this quarantine treating you? If there’s something I can help with, let me know. Leave me a note in the comments, or email me if you need it to be more private than that.

  1. Hello. I just found your blog and am very thankful for it. However, I have a question. I am a Hindu by religion but have always been interested in other religions. I studied at a convent school for 12 years but am still not all that familiar with Christianity. Can I still join your meetings?
